It hasn’t been a great time for Villa recently, has it?
Despite a vital win against Norwich on Boxing Day, we have lost 5 out of our last 6 matches. Our last game, against Watford, saw one of our most abject performances in recent times, causing us to lose 3-0 against a team who had 10 men for over 30 second half minutes and heaping the concerns of relegation on to us further.
But today marks the start of the January transfer window and a chance for Villa to bolster the squad ahead of our relegation fight.
Many media outlets will have this game penned as the Steve Bruce derby – the return of the former, disgruntled manager, coming back to prove a point to the nasty fans and the club who did so wrong by him (I hope the sarcasm came through!)
In actual fact, Steve Bruce should be an irrelevance in this fixture. This game is really about two clubs, who will both be in a relegation battle this season, trying to get an important 3 points.
Beating Norwich 5-1, away at Carrow Road, was hopefully a sign of things to come. We looked good, passing the ball around well, causing the opposition to make mistakes and being ruthless in front of goal. It also sent a message to other teams around us in the bottom half of the league table – we are coming for you!
And Brighton are one of those teams. However, they are coming to Villa Park off the back of a brilliant 3-0 victory against an under-fire Spurs side. So this one promises to be a serious battle!
